Highspeed or lame duck?

Internet traffic is expected to quadruple by 2016. In four years, the volume is predicted to reach 1.3 zettabytes – one zettabyte equals one trillion gigabytes. This would mean that in 2016 more data would be circulating on the internet than in all the previous years. The growth is attributed to an increase in Internet-connected devices, more users and faster networks.

High-speed Internet under the microscope

To evaluate the quality of high speed Internet, various measurements can be performed with the kyago platform. The available upstream and downstream bandwidth is determined by standardised upload and download measurements which are made to data reference systems. These measurements are also carried out at the same time as download or upload in order to determine the behaviour of the products under simultaneous utilisation of the bandwidth. As further QoE indicators, among other things, packet times, the frequency of packet losses, and the time for DNS name resolution are measured.

Cloud under the microscope

Even with large numbers of visitors and temporary sales promotions, customers expect optimal performance. Dissatisfied customers are the result of long load times, faltering music and video clips or unreachable sites.

Average users do not wait longer than four seconds for a website to fully appear. 90 percent of Internet customers turn their backs on an online store after three failed access attempts.

With the kyago platform, on the one hand, response time measurements are performed on the transport layer to a standardized test page (ETSI Kepler Reference Page) to different Webhosting providers and to the zafaco data reference system.

On the other hand, analyses of website requests are carried out on application layer when accessing 25 websites in the different categories “news, internet portals, search engines, shopping and sport”.

In addition, response time measurements to the top gaming servers are carried out.
